![]() ![]() Often when you’re given properties to develop, you have to come up with a pitch, and it’s always good to be bold because you have nothing to lose. The idea of being able to bring the show home, work with a film crew out there, and showcase the landscape really appealed to me. I grew up in Calgary, Alberta, which is kind of like Canada’s Montana. I was delighted the possibility of subverting that and telling some stories from the perspective of people who never get to be front and center. Who gets to be the hero in Westerns? It’s always white dudes riding around, conquering things, and saving people. It was a chance to reinvent the Western with characters who were always on the margin-women, people of color, the LGBTQ community. But when I opened up the comic, I was struck by how feminist it was. And I was like, If she’s going to fight a demon, she’s going to fall right over. ![]() She had giant breasts and a teeny, tiny bikini. It had been published in the ’90s, and it was very anachronistic and dated. So I was definitely looking for what was next, and IDW, a comic book company, and Circle of Confusion, a management company, sent me this comic book called Wynonna Earp by this lovely man named Beau Smith. It had a bisexual lead and became a cult hit. I on a fantasy show called Lost Girl, which was very sex positive. I have been lucky enough to be a woman working in genre, which is unusual in itself. What was the initial inspiration for Wynonna Earp? What was the journey from idea to screen? Bitch spoke with Andras about creating a once-in-a-lifetime show that has endeared itself to so many of us. Their #SaveWynonna campaign is one of the best social media has ever seen, according to Andras, the show’s creator, and she’s hopeful about the show’s future. Now, after four seasons on Syfy, Wynonna Earp has been canceled, but its devoted fanbase, who call themselves Earpers, isn’t letting the show end without a fight. Along the way, Wynonna encounters Wyatt’s old friend, Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon), who reluctantly joins her mission, and reconnects with Waverly, who she left behind. I found Wynonna Earp during the early days of the pandemic when it seemed as if I’d watched everything worth watching and still needed an escape from our confusing reality. ![]() Throughout the entirety of Part I, Vito sits mush-mouthed and stone-faced, impenetrable to analysis from inquiring minds. And he’s as internally opaque as Brando’s Vito at the hour of his death, felled not by a hit squad of Cosa Nostra goons, but a mere heart attack. He’s a monolithic figure, taunting the audience with his inscrutable scowl. As the doors close on Michael, brooding in his newfound authority at the close of the first film, the audience marvels at the unseen spiritual processes that have converted the family’s last bastion of decency into its gaping epicenter of corruption. Both Michael and Brando’s Vito are defined by their interiority, the unknowability that renders their acts of steadyhanded brutality so frighteningly human. The genius of Part II is the way it works as parentheses on the original, expanding on Coppola’s 1972 film in both directions while refusing to clarify the original’s ethical mystique. The mangling of the sequencing of the original films doesn’t just diminish their artistic heft - it obscures the casual brilliance of Part II‘s very sequel-ness. Cross-cutting between young Vito Andolini and Michael underscores the dark connection between the transgressions of American culture’s forefathers and the depraved sins of its corporate heirs. As Coppola envisioned it, and as Richard Marks, Peter Zimmer, and Barry Malkin edited it, elegant parallels between De Niro’s rise to power and Pacino’s consumption by that same force make themselves apparent. Part II‘s ambitious structural gambit splits screen time between the boy who would be Don Corleone growing up in Italy to become ruthless immigrant played by Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino’s Michael as he continues his descent into a morally compromised hell. The most major change that both the Epic and Saga make to Coppola’s original is the reordering of scenes, opening with the sequences depicting young Vito Corleone’s ascension to the top of New York’s criminal heap. Sometimes I will then make a copy of that layer and apply a second Topaz plugin to that layer. What I usually do is all the processing I can in Lightroom, then I open the photo in Photoshop Elements, make a copy of the background layer, and then use one of the Topaz plugins on that layer. I actually hardly ever use Photoshop unless I’m using it for the purpose of the topaz plugins! I am just in the habit of using photoshop elements with plugins because I like how the layering works in PSE. I wouldn’t say that Topaz is a replacement for Photoshop, but you can do things more easily in Topaz because of all the built in presets. But these are all things that you either cannot do in Lightroom at all, or you can do it a lot better and more efficiently with the Topaz plugins.
